Monday, August 16, 2010 : Death Valley, Hoover Dam, Las Vegas


Early in the morning, to avoid the searing heat, we visit the visitor center at Furnace Creek. We see many displays about the geology of the valley, mining, mostly borax, and the famous 20-mule teams, the only way to take minerals out. Just outside, a thermometer displays 110°F (43°C). It's hardly 9:30am, that's promising !

  • CA-140, nice road at the bottom of a valley as we near the park


Yosemite : 60 mi., almost all day, many stops

  • Yosemite Valley
  • Wawona Road and Tunnel View
  • Glacier Point Road, roundtrip (had to be ...)
  • Park exit at Wawona Visitor Center


From Yosemite to Tulare, CA : 122 mi., 2 1/2 hrs

  • CA-41, first a mountain road, then getting wider
  • CA-41 turns into a freeway near Fresno
  • CA-99 from Fresno to Tulare


Driving : 215 mi.

Friday, August 20, 2010 : Grand Canyon, Little Colorado, Page


Once again, we have to get up early. We have booked an early-morning overfly of Grand Canyon from Grand Canyon Airport. We are weighed, to better balance the plane, then we are issued boarding passes, much like a real flight ! At about 9am, we take off and head to Grand Canyon. We are not yet 5 minutes into our flight, and we already enjoy a spectacular view.

  • CA-59 to Merced, a bit busy to cross
  • CA-140 to Mariposa
